Tom Ferrero Studio

Tom Ferrero is a metal artist, painter, designer and teacher. He is also a recipient of a United States FULBRIGHT grant and is a two time, 1st Place, NICHE AWARD winner as well as a 1st place winner in the International SAUL BELL DESIGN competition. He held the rank of Assistant Professor of Jewelry for 6 years at NSCAD Univeristy in Halifax, Canada and is into his second decade as the Department Head of Metalsmithing at Camp Laurel in central Maine. He is currently a part time Art Instructor at Maranacook Community High School where he teaches a variety of classes including Drawing, Painting and Darkroom Photography and is a Lecturer at the University of Maine - Augusta, teaching courses in 3D Design.

At a celebration dinner held on May 15 during the Santa Fe Symposium® in Albuquerque, NM, Rio Grande announced the winners of the 16th annual Saul Bell Design Award competition. Through rigorous judging, a panel of judges chose first- and second-place winners in each of six competitive categories, as well as in the Emerging Jewelry Artist category for designers 21 years and younger. Prizes, awards and congratulations were presented to each winning designer at the gala dinner. The winning designs, as well as all finalist pieces, are featured online at

The Saul Bell Design Award is a chance for jewelers and artists to reach for greater heights of skill, knowledge and imagination as they conceive and execute a career-defining design. The best jewelers from around the world compete to be recognized for excellence in their field.

Tom Ferrero was raised in Windsor, Connecticut and first discovered his love for metal working as a high school student. He continued on to college and became a graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York. There he majored in Metal sculpture and jewelry design, studying under Professors Leonard Urso, Mark Stanitz, & Juan Carlos Caballero-Perez, and received his Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in May 2002.
